Low Absorption of Critical Drugs
The majority of medicines in everyday use are administered orally, and these are absorbed into the bloodstream at different points in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) during their transit. There exists a class of drugs that are only absorbed at a specific (and narrow) portion of the GIT- these are termed narrow absorption window (NAW) drugs. Once these drugs pass their absorption ‘window’, their absorption into the bloodstream diminishes significantly. Some of the drugs in this class (e.g. anti-Parkinson’s and anti-infectives) are important not only for individual patients but also from a public health perspective. At the University of Huddersfield, researchers are working intensively to resolve the problem of the sub-optimal absorption of NAW drugs. Initial design concepts to remedy this problem have been translated into prototype designs, with some notable success.
The technology being developed is based on a fabricated system (device) which utilises novel ‘green’ biodegradable material, and is intended for oral administration. The technology is applicable to all NAW drugs, and has potential utility in a wide range of therapeutic classes. Early porotypes have been tested in pre-clinical models and the results have been highly encouraging.
GHORI Laboratories
GHORI Laboratories based at University of Huddersfield work across different areas in pharmaceutical technology and materials sciences to develop technology-driven control release, age-appropriate, targeted and electrically triggered pharmaceutical formulations. The group has extensive experience in design, development and characterization of new materials, products, instruments and technologies including 3D and 4D printing, nanoscale chemical, electrical and mechanical imaging-based techniques
Benefits of Our Solution
Our technology improves compliance through low frequency of medicines administration, low polymer accumulation in the body and used material is 50% more biodegradable.
We improve efficiency through enhanced absorption with an equivalent dose and equivalent efficacy with a lesser dose.
The use of lower doses makes our solution safer for patients.
We can offer pre-clinical results and proven efficacy increasing changes of passing.
We utilise a highly innovative material which is biodegradable and ensure our technology is sustainable and fits in with the circular bioeconomy, something we are passionate about.
